Nutritional optic neuropathy - the condition the young man has - is treatable if diagnosed early. Left too long, however, the nerve fibres in the optic nerve die and the damage becomes permanent.
Dr Atan said cases like this are thankfully uncommon, but that parents should be aware of the potential harm that can be caused by picky eating, and seek expert help.
For those who are concerned, she advised: "It's best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal."
She said multivitamin tablets can supplement a diet, but are not a substitute for eating healthily.
"It's much better to take on vitamins through a varied and balanced diet," she said, adding that too much of certain vitamins, including vitamin A, can be toxic, "so you don't want to overdo it".
Dr Atan said vegans are also at increased risk of B12 deficiency-related sight problems if they do not replace what they can lack when excluding meat from their diet.
"Nutritional yeast is a way of adding B12 to your diet," she said.
Without any known health benefits of fluoride to babies, and with known potential harms, expectant mothers would do well to decrease or limit the amount of fluoride they consume.
On Monday, JAMA Pediatrics published a new research article on the potential effects on infant development of fluoride in our drinking water. In the decades-long controversial debate about whether fluoride is good or bad for human health, this research concluded that fluoride consumed by woman during pregnancy can decrease the intelligence (IQ scores) of their babies.
But before parents get too worked up about the results of this one study, there is a lot to know about fluoride and its essential, but scandalous role in public health — particularly in the United States, Canada, and Europe, where it is intentionally placed in public drinking water.
Nigeria is the last country in Africa to have witnessed a case of polio - in Borno state, in the north-east. Outside of Nigeria, the last case on the continent was in the Puntland region of Somalia, in 2014. //
But "to end polio, at least 95% of children must be vaccinated, no matter where they live," says WHO head of polio eradication Michel Zaffran. Today, only two countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan - remain polio-endemic, down from more than 125 in 1988
Africa is on the verge of being declared polio free, after three years without any recorded cases of the disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Nigeria marked three years without a wild polio case on Wednesday, a “major milestone”. If no more incidences emerge in the next few months, Africa could officially be declared polio free in 2020. The last case was recorded in Borno state in August 2016.
Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO regional director for Africa, said: “We are confident that soon we will be trumpeting the certification that countries have, once and for all, kicked polio out of Africa.”
She added that stopping the disease has not been easy and praised the “monumental effort” of health workers “on an unprecedented scale”. She said exhaustive surveillance of people on the move was a significant factor in the progress.
In 2012, 200 children in Nigeria were affected by polio, which can cause paralysis and life-long health complications. The number made up more than half of all global cases.

The average number of years babies born around the world are expected to live without any serious medical or health issues increased by about 5 years since 2000.
aphthous ulcers can be caused by anthing that upsets your biological equilibrium- ie a fever, a simple cold. medications. stress, period etc. theu will run threi course between 7-10 days as a rule. avoid acidic drinks and food as a matter of comfort. if there is a pharmacy nearby see if they can mix a 50/50 mixture of milk of magnesia and elixir of benadryl shake it and rinse and SPIT with around 15 cc per use. repeat every 3-4 hours or just before eating. have used this old remedy sucessfully in patients for over 35 years. once prone to these you can expect they can reoccur in the future
Avoidance of sun exposure is a risk factor for all‐cause mortality: results from the Melanoma in Southern Sweden cohort
Sunlight exposure and fair skin are major determinants of human vitamin D production, but they are also risk factors for cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM). There is epidemiological evidence that all‐cause mortality is related to low vitamin D levels.
“The older patients I was seeing [who had] lots of sun damage and lots of skin cancer would be very robust, very energetic people,” he says. These were people who, apart from their skin cancers, tended to be in excellent health and taking very few prescription drugs.
“But then I’d see these people who had beautiful skin and no cancers, and they were very low-energy and taking medications for all these different health problems,” he recalls. He began to wonder whether exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, mostly from the sun, had more health benefits than he and other experts realized. //
In 2014, a study appeared that Zirwas says changed his thinking from “this is all kind of interesting” to “holy shit!”
That study was published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, and it examined 20 years of health data collected from nearly 30,000 Swedish women. //
The study found that the risk of death from all causes approximately doubled among women who tended to avoid the sun compared to women who got the greatest amount of UV exposure — including from both the sun and from tanning beds. The relationship was dose-dependent, the study found, meaning that the more sun a woman reported getting, the lower her risk of death. The protective effect of sun exposure remained significant, even after the study authors adjusted their figures for income, BMI, smoking history, and other factors that could account for their findings. //
“If that study’s findings are correct,” Zirwas says, “that means protecting yourself from ultraviolet light could have the same effect on your mortality as deciding to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.” //
Even if sun exposure were the sole cause of all skin cancers, which is unlikely, the lethality of the disease is far lower than one might assume. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that melanoma will kill 7,230 people in the United States this year, while other forms of skin cancer will claim another 4,420 lives. Cardiovascular disease, meanwhile, kills approximately 650,000 Americans each year, per the CDC. Both Zirwas and Weller argue that if sun exposure offers even modest protection against heart disease, the benefits of sun exposure could quickly outweigh its risks. //
But short of burning, he says [Zirwas] has no problem with people developing a tan — a position that would likely outrage many of his fellow dermatologists. “I think the benefits of [non-burning] sun exposure far outweigh the skin-cancer risks,” he says.
Tinnitus is found among people who take Malarone, especially for people who are male, 60+ old , have been taking the drug for < 1 month, also take medication Lariam, and have Cataplexy. This study is created by eHealthMe based on reports of 2,440 people who have side effects when taking Malarone from FDA, and is updated regularly.
2,440 people reported to have side effects when taking Malarone.
Among them, 24 people (0.98%) have Tinnitus

CAR-T is the pinnacle of personalised medicine as it has to be developed for each individual patient.
Firstly, parts of the immune system - specifically white blood cells called T-cells - are removed from the patient's blood.
They are frozen in liquid nitrogen and sent to laboratories in the United States.
There, the white blood cells are genetically reprogrammed so that rather than killing bacteria and viruses, they will seek out and destroy cancer.
They are now "chimeric antigen receptor T-cells" - or CAR-T cells.
Millions of the modified cells are grown in the lab, before being shipped back to the UK where they are infused into the patient's bloodstream.
The whole manufacturing process takes a month.
As this is a "living drug", the cancer-killing T-cells stay in the body for a long time and will continue to grow and work inside the patient.
Mike says the side-effects of his treatment were worse than either of his two batches of chemotherapy.
Short-term neurotoxicity, where the brain and nerves are affected, can lead to confusion, difficultly speaking and a loss of consciousness.
There are five days after the treatment, when Mike was on intensive care, that he cannot remember at all.

Prof Jog believes Parkinson's disease reduces the signals coming back to the brain - breaking the loop and causing the patient to freeze.
The implant his team has developed boosts that signal, enabling the patient to walk normally.
However, Prof Jog was surprised that the treatment was long-lasting and worked even when the implant was turned off.
He believes the electrical stimulus reawakens the feedback mechanism from legs to brain that is damaged by the disease.
"This is a completely different rehabilitation therapy," he said. "We had thought that the movement problems occurred in Parkinson's patients because signals from the brain to the legs were not getting through.
"But it seems that it's the signals getting back to the brain that are degraded."
Their experiments showed that the best way to treat a sting from a man o’ war is to rinse the wound with vinegar to remove any residual stingers or bits of tentacle left on the skin, and then immerse the wound in hot water—ideally at a temperature of 113 degrees F (45 degrees C)—for 45 minutes. A hot pack will substitute nicely for the hot water, as will a spray called Sting No More, which was developed to treat combat divers under a Department of Defense grant. Even a quick, 30-second wash of diluted vinegar will confer protective effects.
A hearing in the Senate last week on vaccinations drew little attention... far less than perhaps it should have. //
We are told by many of these vaccine-resistant parents that “experts” have shown the links between vaccines and autism. People have gone to extraordinary lengths to promote these bad studies. One of the key proponents behind the modern anti-vaccination movement is Andrew Wakefield, who falsified data in order to show a link between autism and the MMR vaccine. He’s since been unlicensed in the UK for his fake study.
