SOLVED: Why is my screen frozen even after hard reset? - Kindle 2 - iFixit
thumbnail

My wife let her Kindle Paper White's battery get so low that the screen froze. Last night she put it on charge and this morning it still had a frozen screen and it hadn't charged. Here's what you need to do if it happens to you. Fasten it to your computer. Your computer will not recognize it. Hard-boot the Kindle by holding the power button down for 20 seconds or more. Nothing appears to happen. Leave things as they are for an hour or so and it will then tell you that it is charging (with a never-seen-before screen). Again, your computer still won't recognize the fact that it's fastened to it. Leave things alone! Eventually, the Kindle will shut down properly, it will reboot, your computer will recognize it and it will start to charge normally. You don't need to "eject" it from your computer, just leave it alone and it will charge fully and then you can use it. When the battery gets SO low, it's a game of patience and I suspect the same is true of other stubborn frozen screen situations.

Office 365 (Thunderbird) - Configure Modern Authentication

Office 365 (Thunderbird) - Configure Modern Authentication

This document describes how to configure modern, 2 factor authentication with new ThunderBird versions

Note: These instructions assume you are running a version of Thunderbird 77.0b1 or later which supports OAuth2 modern authentication.

Using OAuth2 with Thunderbird and Gmail - Super Tech Crew

To use Thunderbird to access your Gmail account, Google will tell you that you must allow “Insecure apps” in your Google security settings. However, since version 38, Thunderbird has supported Oauth2 with Gmail, so you don’t have to enable “Insecure apps”. Google just doesn’t tell you that.

Here I will show you how to change the authentication method on existing accounts from using a saved password, to using a key, namely Oauth2. It allows controlled access for an app, to a set of features that you allow. In this case it will be for just your emails, not your entire Google account like it does now.

In Thunderbird, go to Account Settings in the menu. Under the Gmail account that you want to enable Oauth2 for, go to Server Settings. Select Oauth2 from the drop down menu next to Authentication method.

Do the same for sending mail, by going to the Outgoing Server on the left side, selecting the Gmail account, and selecting Oauth2 from the drop down menu next to Authentication method.

Save the changes by hitting Ok.

Now that we’ve made the changes, we need to removed the saved passwords. Otherwise Thunderbird may keep on trying to use the old passwords. Go to your saved passwords at Preferences > Security > Saved Passwords.Next, restart Thunderbird.

When Thunderbird starts back up, it will show you a prompt for your password. This is actually a web portal that is asking for your user name and password to log in, so you can grant access to Thunderbird.

Go ahead and log in.

Once you have logged in, Google will ask for your permission to allow Thunderbird to access your emails.

Click “Allow” (otherwise this will have all been for nothing…)

And you’re done! Doing this once will enable both the incoming and outgoing emails to work.

Turn off “Allow insecure apps”

If Thunderbird was the only application that was logging in with your password, you should be able to go into your Google account security settings and change “Allow Insecure Apps” to off.

Move content to a shared drive - G Suite Admin Help

Move content to a shared drive

As an administrator, you can let file editors in your organization move content from My Drive or shared drives to other shared drives.

Note: If you move content between shared drives and other folders, be aware that moving them could give people access to information that they shouldn't have, such as privileged information. Be especially careful if you’re sharing items outside of your organization.

Opinion: The Abraham Accords and the Prospect of Peace and Friendship

For the longest time after the Camp David Accords, relations between Israel and Egypt could only be described as “coldly correct,” each side exactingly adhering to the terms of that particular treaty. It took the Persian threat along with that posed by Al Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood, to move both Egypt and Israel from coldly correct to active, positive, nay enthusiastic (if covert) intelligence sharing and full cooperation. This brings us to the recently changed relationships between Israel and United Arab Emirates & Bahrain—and Saudi Arabia. //

You can easily imagine how difficult it is for the Royal Family to make open and notorious gestures towards a nation that many of their religion believe has no right to exist. This new set of diplomatic advances was accompanied by the Saudi government publicly allowing (and announcing that fact) direct flights starting or ending in Israel to overfly its territory. That is a far cry from clandestine meetings between the Saudi Intelligence Service Agents and Mossad Operatives. //

There was something different about Tuesday’s event. I was watching the faces…and also the body language…especially during the part where each party had to sign multiple copies of the treaty…one in English, one in Hebrew and one in Arabic (2nd ceremony had two in Arabic). Netanyahu was asked by his Arabic counterparts where to sign on the Hebrew version, while he in turn asked them the same on the Arabic one. The same thing occurred on President Trump’s end of the table, except he needed help from both an Israeli and an Arab.

I realize that I’m not a State Department Professional, but there was something different. The vibe I was getting was almost that of 4 or 5 guys who get together regularly for poker or golf. These leaders looked happy to be there, doing what they were doing and most importantly, doing it with others they wanted to be doing it with. I credit President Trump for this.

With the Camp David Accords, President Carter was the only one who was trusted by all sides, hence the long period of coldly correct relations. In fact, one of the Egyptian demands, was that every two years, the United States must conduct military exercises in Egypt as a deterrent to possible Israeli attack. Thus was born operation BRIGHT STAR. This agreement starts at a point decades further than Camp David. //

There is important reason these are called the Abraham Accords. Christians, Jews and Muslims are all descendants of Abraham. This breakthrough, if followed by a majority of the Arab League (especially Saudi Arabia) is a giant leap towards bringing about a lasting peace between Judeo-Christianity and the Arab world.

You Are Not Required to Read the 1619 Project to Reject It as Bad History (and Worse Journalism)

The 1619 Project should not be read by anyone, really. //

Facts can be inconvenient to narratives, as any politician will tell you. The problem is that journalists aren’t supposed to be politicians. They are supposed to focus on the facts and let those facts speak for themselves. Wemple is joining in the narrative by further trying to portray Trump as some sort of unread buffoon.

But you don’t have to read the 1619 Project to know that it does a bad job of being a historical analysis and journalism project. If you have dozens of historians coming forward and saying the central premise of a project is wrong, then its credibility is gone. There is no need to read it.

You could argue that Trump should better articulate what is wrong with it (there are plenty of arguments to choose from), but Wemple (and others on social media) decided instead to attack the man r

Matt Blaze: A Cryptologic Mystery

Compromised reveals that the FBI found that during at least some of the time the illegals were under investigation, the Russian numbers intended for them were sent not by a transmitter in Russia (which might have difficulty being reliably received in the US), but relayed by the Cuban shortwave numbers station. This is perhaps a bit surprising, since the period in question (2000-2010) was well after the Soviet Union, the historic protector of Cuba's government, had ceased to exist.

The Cuban numbers station is somewhat legendary. It is a powerful station, operated by Cuba's intelligence directorate but co-located with Radio Habana's transmitters near Bauta, Cuba, and is easily received with even very modest equipment throughout the US. While its numbers transmissions have taken a variety of forms over the years, during the early 2000's it operated around the clock, transmitting in both voice and morse code. The station was (and remains) so powerful and widely heard that radio hobbyists quickly derived its hourly schedule. During this period, each scheduled hourly transmission consisted of a preamble followed by three messages, each made up entirely of a series of five digit groups (with by a brief period of silence separating the three messages). The three hourly messages would take a total of about 45 minutes, in either voice or morse code depending on the scheduled time and frequency. Every hour, the same thing, predictably right on schedule (with fill traffic presumably substituted for the slots during which there was no actual message).

If you want to hear what this sounded like, here's a recording I made on October 4, 2008 of one of the hourly voice transmissions, as received (static and all) in my Philadelphia apartment: www.mattblaze.org/private/17435khz-200810041700.mp3. The transmission follows the standard Cuban numbers format of the time, starting with an "Atenćion" preamble listing three five-digit identifiers for the three messages that follow, and ending with "Final, Final". In this recording, the first of the three messages (64202) starts at 3:00, the second (65852) at 16:00, and the third (86321) at 29:00, with the "Final" signoff at the end. The transmissions are, to my cryptographic ear at least, both profoundly dull and yet also eerily riveting.

And this is where the mystery I've been wondering about comes in. In 2007, I noticed an odd anomaly: some messages completely lacked the digit 9 ("nueve"). Most messages had, as they always did and as you'd expect with OTP ciphertext, a uniform distribution of the digits 0-9. But other messages, at random times, suddenly had no 9s at all. I wasn't the only (or the first) person to notice this; apparently the 9s started disappearing from messages some time around 2005.

This is, to say the least, very odd. The way OTPs work should produce a uniform distribution of all ten digits in the ciphertext. The odds of an entire message lacking 9s (or any other digit) are infinitesimal. And yet such messages were plainly being transmitted, and fairly often at that. In fact, in the recording of the 2008 transmission linked to above, you will notice that while the second and third messages use all ten digits, the first is completely devoid of 9s.

I remember concluding that the most likely, if still rather improbable, explanation was that the 9-less messages were dummy fill traffic and that the random number generator used to create the messages had a bug or developed a defect that prevented 9s from being included. This would be, to say the least, a very serious error, since it would allow a listener to easily distinguish fill traffic from real traffic, completely negating the benefit of having fill traffic in the first place. It would open the door to exactly the kind of traffic analysis that the system was carefully engineered to thwart. The 9-less messages went on for almost ten years. (If I were reporting this as an Internet vulnerability, I would dub it the "Nein Nines" attack; please forgive the linguistic muddle). But I was resigned to the likelihood that I would never know for sure.

And this brings us to the second observation from Strzok's book.

Compromised doesn't say anything about missing nueves, but he does mention that the FBI exploited a serious tradecraft error on the part of the sender: the FBI was able to tell when messages were and weren't being sent during the weekly timeslot when the suspect couple was observed in the room where they copied traffic. Even worse (for the illegals), empty message slots correlated perfectly with times that the suspect couple was traveling and not able to copy messages. This observation helped confirm the FBI's suspicions and ultimately led to their arrest and expulsion (along with the rest of the Russian illegals network).

Ironically, this was not the first time that Russian/Soviet intelligence has been burned by sloppy OTP practices. The first was, more famously, the disastrous re-use of OTPs discovered and exploited in the Venona intercepts.

One time pads can be a cryptographic landmine. They have a very attractive property - provable security! - but at the cost of unforgiving operational assumptions that can be hard to meet in practice. OTPs have long been a favorite of hucksters selling supposedly "unbreakable" encryption software. So remember this story next time someone tries to sell you their super-secure one-time-pad-based crypto scheme. If actual Russian spies can't use it securely, chances are neither can you.

Anyway, as they say on the radio...

Democrats Are in a Panic Over Prospect of a Durham Interim Report — They Know the News Is Bad

Earlier today, Democrat Leaders of House Committees released a letter sent by them to Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, asking him to initiate an “emergency” investigation of the Durham investigation because …. well, I’m not sure what their justification is.

If, as is reported, it’s over the suggestion that Attorney General Barr has asked Durham to produce an interim report prior to the election, that claim is going nowhere.

The IG is not a “super-supervisor” of all things DOJ, including the Attorney General. If he was he’d be … the Attorney General.

But the IG does review compliance with explicit DOJ policies, and the review the Democrats seem to be calling for is likely to end with the actual text of the policy they think the AG is preparing to “violate” by calling for an interim report. //

1-7.400 – Disclosure of Information Concerning Ongoing Criminal, Civil, or Administrative Investigations

A. Any communication by DOJ personnel with a member of the media relating to a pending investigation or case must be approved in advance by the appropriate United States Attorney or Assistant Attorney General…

B. DOJ generally will not confirm the existence of or otherwise comment about ongoing investigations….

C. When the community needs to be reassured that the appropriate law enforcement agency is investigating a matter, or where release of information is necessary to protect the public safety, comments about or confirmation of an ongoing investigation may be necessary, subject to the approval requirement in subparagraph A.

Biden: "Guys like me, the first in my family to go to college... we are as good as anybody else, and guys like Trump, who inherited everything and squandered what they inherited, are the people I've always had a problem with"

@MZHemingway
FWIW, the New York Times reported in 1987 that Biden admitted his claim of being the first in his family to go to college was not true. It was rather famously plagiarized from a speech by British Labor leader Neil Kinnock. https://nytimes.com/1987/09/18/us/biden-admits-plagiarism-in-school-but-says-it-was-not-malevolent.html

@seanmdav
Not only is Biden’s claim not true, it was plagiarized by Biden during his first presidential campaign run back in 1987.

Again, the big problem with so many in political media isn’t that they’re biased; it’s that they’re ignorant and often quite dumb.

End of support for Basic Authentication access to Exchange Online API’s for Office 365 customers - Microsoft 365 Developer Blog

Today, we are announcing that on October 13th, 2020 we will stop supporting and retire Basic Authentication for Exchange Active Sync (EAS), Post Office Protocol (POP), Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), and Remote PowerShell (RPS) in Exchange Online. This means that new or existing applications using one or more of these API’s/protocols will not be able to use Basic Authentication when connecting to Office 365 mailboxes or endpoints and will need to update how they authenticate. //

we are making significant investments to our service that include OAuth 2.0 support for POP, IMAP, and background application support for Remote PowerShell MFA module. We will be sharing more information on these new features over the coming months. For more information on OAuth 2.0 and details on how to make the transition, please refer to the following articles:

2. Move files to shared drives - G Suite Learning Center

First, note the following:

  • You can move multiple files at once.
  • Unless you are an administrator, you can’t move folders from My Drive into a shared drive, but you can create new folders in a shared drive. For details about moving folders as an admin, see Migrate content to a shared drive.
  • Anyone you directly shared a file with retains access, unless your shared drive doesn’t allow non-members.
  • People who had access to the file from a folder that's been shared don’t retain access once you move a file. If you want these people to keep access, update your permissions after moving your files to a shared drive.
  • When you move a file to a shared drive, the team becomes the owner of the file.

To move files from My Drive into a shared drive or between shared drives, drag the files into the destination shared drive. To move folders,
contact your G Suite admin.

Move files from My Drive to a shared drive:

You can move any file you own into a shared drive, whether it’s from another Drive location or from your computer or mobile device.

If you’re not the owner of a file in My Drive, but you have at least Edit access to the file, you might be able to move that file into a shared drive, if:

  • Your G Suite admin has enabled this option.
  • The file’s owner is a member of the shared drive where you want to move the file.

Otherwise, you need to ask the owner to move the file into the shared drive.

Joe Biden Plagiarized Neil Kinnock’s Life Again — Dementia Joe has Lost his Grip on Realilty and That is Dangerous

Joe Biden never let the truth slow him down - Dementia Joe doesn't know what the truth is anymore. //

But that was ALWAYS Joe Biden’s biggest problem — he was willing to say pretty much anything about himself if he thought it enhanced his standing in the media or the Democrat Party. Here are some of the lines that drove him from the race in September 1987 when the NYT and Des Moines Register reported the plagiarism: //

In May 1987, in a speech before the Welsh Labour Party, Neil Kinnock had delivered the following lines: //

some reporters recognized that Biden had used these lines before, and when he did he had attributed them to Kinnock — he didn’t claim them for his own. But it was also beyond dispute that in the instances cited by the NYT and Des Moines Register, Biden had personalized that part of the stump speech without referencing Kinnock — and several other aspects of Kinnock’s earlier speech — and claimed them for his own. //

What came to be more widely understood in the aftermath of Biden’s departure from the race because of the controversy over Kinnock’s biography was that Biden was a serial offender, taking parts of speeches without attribution from other prominent Democrats over the years. Again, without the benefit of the internet, this took a decent amount of legwork by political reporters.

In a speech to the California Democratic Party Biden used without attribution passages from a speech given by Robert F. Kennedy had John F. Kennedy. In 1985 and 1986 Biden’s speeches used without attribution a passage from a 1976 speech by Hubert H. Humphrey. //

As a part of the Kinnock controversy, it was revealed that Biden had been involved in a similar incident during his first year at Syracuse University School of Law in 1965. Biden initially received an “F” in an introductory class on the legal methodology for writing a paper relying almost exclusively on a single Fordham Law Review article, which he had cited only once. //

Dementia Joe knows he’s running for President. Dementia Joe knows that he’s been a prominent politician in the United States for nearly 50 years. Dementia Joe knows that he SHOULD know things of substance and significance. Dementia Joe knows the stories that are in his head, and that he should be able to tell just as he’s told them for decades. So he does.

But Dementia Joe no longer knows if those stories are all true, partly true, or not true at all.

Joe Biden knew, but didn’t concern himself with such unimportant details. But Joe Biden isn’t running for President.

Dementia Joe is on the ballot for the Democrat Party.
